Ben Hirsch competes in Europe’s highest altitude marathon

Competing in the Wokingham Half-Marathon, 2010

On Saturday 31 July, Barnes Runner Ben Hirsch will compete in the highest altitude marathon in Europe – The Swiss Alpine Marathon K42 – to raise funds for ‘Sisters of Charity St Vincent de Paul,’ who are undertaking educational projects in Ethiopia. The money he raises will primarily go towards school lunches for the poorer children, many of whom depend on a school meal as their only decent meal for the day. Additionaly, some funds will go towards teacher training and books.

Anything you are able to donate will be greatly appreciated; Ben can confirm that the money genuinely does go to the end cause and even small amounts make a disproportionate difference to these people in a country still victim to poor harvests political issues.

Please visit www.justgiving.com/Ben-Hirsch for information about how you might make a donation.

Abbas smashes 5k club record!

Battersea Park, 7.16pm Monday 24th May. Abbas finishes 6th in Sri Chinmoy race series in provisional time of 16min 05 sec. This knocks a whole 2 minutes off the previous club record. Not bad for 45 years old -  although he did let on that he was training twice-a-day for the last few weeks (very un-Barnes Runners like!) Just shows what you can do when you put the time in!. Congratulations to Abbas on a fine achievement, which gives a magnificent age-graded 88%.

Sunday run and appeal for help

Dear all,

We are five and six weeks from the Brighton and London Marathons, respectively. Over the last few months, a number of Barnes Runners have been doing slightly longer runs on Sunday mornings as part of their training.
This Sunday (14 March), rather than run a circular route, the plan is to run approximately 33.5 km from Barnes (Rose House), to Chertsey. You can view a map of the intended route at http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3463035.
As usual, we would like to invite anybody who feels minded to run a slightly further distance than normal to join us. We will be departing at 08:15 hours.
There is, however, one particular (unfortunate) corollary to running long distances in one direction: one finds oneself having to get back. There is a direct rail service from Chertsey to Barnes, and we are intending to make use of that service. But it should be remembered that we will be wearing damp, possibly muddy, thin layers of clothing that are not necessarily designed for keeping the mid-March cold out and our much-prized body heat in. We would therefore like to appeal to people’s goodwill and ask if anybody in the club would like to drive to Chertsey with sets of dry, warm clothes for those who elect to run, so that they might (a) be able to enjoy lunch and (b) travel back to Barnes by rail without catching cold. It goes without saying (but should perhaps be said nonetheless) that whoever volunteers to do this would be stood a fine lunch in compensation for their efforts and driving.
I should point out that the person in question need not necessarily be a member of the club. Perhaps you have a husband, a wife… or a “special” friend who could lend a hand… or possibly even miscreant progeny with a clean driver’s license and time on their hands.

Could I ask you to let me know if (a) you are planning on accompanying us on this odyssey and (b) you can lend a hand with the logistics of the operation?

Please feel free to contact me on my mobile telephone (07768 795611).

Many thanks…

Josh
